Sewing Classes are back!. If you want to learn the timeless art of how to use a sewing machine with ease and expertise this class is for you. You will learn the skills  to be confident using a machine from threading to stitching. In collaboration with the the Belfast Repair Cafe. The Repair Cafe’s talented stitchers and expert machinists will take you from a piece of material to creating your own unique sewing project each week.  Machines and material, including reclaimed fabrics provided or bring your own machine to work on. Come to all three or pick and mix. All abilities welcome. With the skills you will learn there will be no stopping you!

Heritage ‘Creepie’ Stool

Not to be missed. New to BTL, local artisan woodworker Craig brings us the Creepie Stool. These heritage stools are both beautiful and functional and will be made from recycled wood. This class will cover the skills of measuring, marking and cutting wood with precision, structural integrity to ensure strength when attaching wood together and functional design. Using a range of tools you’ll make your own stunning bespoke stool that will last a lifetime and have many uses. Suitable for all levels of experience.

Creating a Workbench





Dates: Sunday 7th April. 10-4pm

From Design principles to completion come to this exciting new class to build a multi-function workbench.

You will learn how to make the legendary mortise and tenon joint, precision measuring and cutting of wood using hand and power tools. Working together on a collaborative project you will build a workbench to be used in the BTL workshop and how to adapt the design principles for a smaller space to make one of your own.

Artisan woodworker, furniture maker and experienced Tutor Louise Anson will teach you the inside skills of the trade and guide you to creat a bespoke workbench that will be of benefit for generations of people to come in the BTL workshop. Book early this one is not to be missed.

The Plant Pot Stand

Got a plant sitting around somewhere that you think would benefit from a loftier position? Wanting to learn intermediate woodworking skills? Matthew Hutcheson is here to help. Teaching more advanced woodwork skills over two classes, you’ll learn to craft a bespoke piece starting by machining rough timber down to size and learning how to create the perfect joint under expert instruction and supervision.

Hardwood Candle & Flower Holders

Tool Sharpening Class

Maintaining sharp tools is an essential skill for the craftsperson. Craig has learned the hard way how to hand sharpen tools so that they are fit for purpose. 

You will learn the basics of sharpening and honing by hand, and the equipment you need to have delightfully sharp tools to make joints, shape wood with ease. Experienced artisan woodworker Craig will guide you in developing your sharpening skills to a level that will surprise and amaze.


















Butter knife/Spoon whittling class

In this class you will learn the skills of whittling green wood to make a spoon or butter knife from the branch of a tree. Local greenwoodwork expert Craig will teach you the types of wood to use, how to prepare the blank wood and shape your utensil using an axe and knives. From branch to utensil you will create your own butter knife or spoon in an evening of relaxing Green Woodwork How cool is that!.








Using Hand Tools- Chisels

This series is about the age old skills and joy of using hand tools to craft and join wood. Matthew will teach you the basics of Joinery skills. Starting with Chisels -Rather than open tins of paint with them!, learn the amazing things you can do with a chisel and wood. All you need to know about a chisel, how to sharpen, how to use with skill and precision, working with wood to shape it into joints. You will complete a versatile housing joint to take home.

Using Hand Tools- Saws

The third in the series - The Hand plane, In this class you will learn about the different types of plane, how to sharpen the blade , how to use to take shavings and create flat sides on wood. You will craft a joint between 2 boards to make a wide chopping board.

Willow Weaving

Come to this brand new class to learn basic willow weaving techniques and  make a fish shape and Eye of God or Mexican Eye. Learning the crisscrossing techniques in  4 directions to create your own piece of natural art. These skills provide a great place to start learning the craft of willow weaving. Prof Steve Potter is back and this time he’s brought some entrance music. In this class, you’ll learn the basics of components and circuitry, learn how to solder on a printed circuit board and build your very own Bluetooth speaker or FM Radio in the process. Computerised Woodworking (CNC)

It’s finally here! The TWO CLASS build that you’ve all been waiting for! Introduction to computerised woodwork using a laptop design package and a CNC machine. This is the big one! Attendees will be guided by none other than Prof Steve Potter as they design and carve their very own wooden masterpiece using CAD and CNC technology. The first class will be the design element, using your own laptop to put your creative flair to the test. The second class will be transferring that design into the CNC machine and watching it work, learning more about the process as you go. The only limit is your imagination. And the time. Obviously.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ATTENDANTS MUST COME TWO BOTH CLASSES AND MUST HAVE A WINDOWS LAPTOP THAT THEY CAN BRING WITH THEM.

EACH CLASS WILL BE 4.5hrs LONG WITH A 30min BREAK IN THE MIDDLE.
